Rainy, icy weather delays throngs of Christmas travelers at New York airports

A significant number of holiday air travelers found it difficult to leave New York for their destinations Wednesday, the Christmas Eve, because of rainy and icy weather.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration reported that Newark Liberty International Airport, an international airport within the city limits of both Newark and Elizabeth, New Jersey bordering New York, was experiencing delays of more than four hours, while Kennedy International Airport, the top international air passenger gateway to the United States, had delays averaging about three hours.

Heavy rain poured upon New York city area on Christmas Eve and made both urban and suburban transportation difficult, while snow remained unmelted in many areas of the city.
