Secretary of State's Salary Cut for Hillary

The U.S. Congress has voted to cut the Secretary of State's salary back to its pre-2007 level, paving the way for Hillary Clinton to fill that post, CNN reported Thursday.

The move was meant to conform to a clause in the Constitution stipulating a member of congress cannot be appointed to a government job if the position's salary has increased during the lawmaker's current term.

When President George W. Bush authorized a pay raise of 5,000 U.S. dollars for the secretary of state last January, Hillary is a sitting senator.

Therefore, the former first lady will be ineligible for serving as the secretary of state in the incoming Obama administration if the Congress didn't cut back secretary of state's salary.

Similar situations happened in U.S. history.

The nearest took place in 1993 when then president Bill Clinton picked then senator Lloyd Bernthsen as treasury secretary.

While Hillary is missing out on the pay raise, she still stands to make about 10,000 dollars more a year as secretary of state
