Visiting Honduras?

Visiting Honduras?

Will be there for a full 6 days in Feb. Can get a cheap hostel in San Pedro Sula then daily travelling in buses.

I don't intend to spend $ for tourist activities. I just want to explore different areas … the most important being different natural areas and different cities (architectures, parks, hills, rivers).

What are the typical cost for travelling in those direct buses? Ex: San Pedro to the capital.
What could be those 3-5 cities to visit that could be different from each other?

Santa Rosa de Copan and las Ruinas de Copan. Figure on at least 1 night out before returning to San Pedro Sula. Go to the coast, to La Ceiba, you may make it there and back in one day if you really push it but better to stay over night. Tegucigalpa. This is another overnight trip. For seeing things you should try to rent a car with a driver. There are lots of colonial looking small towns once you get out of the bigger towns.
But Honduras can be a rough place, don't be stupid, don't ty to go native, don't flaunt your cash and cameras and so forth.

Is it possible to travel to France with another form of ID than passport?

Is it possible to travel to France with another form of ID than passport?

My passport is currently hold by a foreign embassy for a visa application, however, i need to travel to France for 2 days next week. Is any other form of ID accepted? (driving license maybe?)

When travelling from UK to France, you will need your passport. Unlike those from other Euro countries who just need an ID card to travel.

What is the cheapest way to get around France without taking a plane?

What is the cheapest way to get around France without taking a plane?

I am going to Barcelona for new years and then need to be in Lille (top of france) by 15th Jan. I would love to take a train or bus up there, stopping at little towns along the way etc to get a thorough glimpse of France. Anyone know the most cost efficient way to do this? I dont want to go on a tour, and Ive seen the Eurail pass but it seems so expensive!

Your best bet might be to take the equivalent of a greyhound bus but whatever the French version would be. I've seen city buses pass through here but I'm not sure what buses other than tour bus's that would take you the way you want to go in terms of stopping here and there along the way. The train you won't be able to see much. Plus you will have to worry about getting back to the train station fast depending on how long each train stays at each stop.

Investigation finds plane rolling violently before crash in New York

Investigation finds plane rolling violently before crash in New York

A commuter airliner that crashed Thursday in upstate New York underwent violent "pitching and rolling" seconds before impact, with passengers experiencing twice the normal force of gravity, a U.S. federal investigator said Sunday.

    According to a CNN report on its website, the plane's final 800-foot (about 244 meters) fall took five seconds, Steve Chealander of the National Transportation Safety Board was quoted as saying.

    The 50-seat commuter plane, Continental Express Flight 3407 operated by Colgan Air, was flying from Newark to Buffalo when it dived into a single-home house in Clarence Center on Thursday.

    All 49 people aboard, including 44 passengers and five crewmembers, were killed. A 61-year-old man in the house also died, but his wife and daughter were able to escape with minor injuries.

    Final motions of the aircraft were so "drastic" that the plane's autopilot automatically disengaged and warnings sounded, Chealander said, citing information from the plane's flight data and cockpit voice recorders.

    Also, a "stick-shaker" device, which noisily vibrated an airplane's controls to warn the pilot of imminent stall, kicked in, he said.

    Chealander told a press conference on Friday that cockpit voice recording showed that the crew were discussing "significant" ice buildup on the aircraft's windshield and wings shortly before the plane crashed, although the pneumatic icing boots were switched on.

    When turned on, pneumatic icing boots would usually expand and break free ice that has developed at the wings' edges, he said.

    The CNN report said icing has become a focus as a possible cause of the tragedy, while Chealander said the actual cause of the crash remained unclear Saturday.

    The crash is reportedly America's deadliest since a Comair commuter jet crashed in Lexington, Kentucky, on Aug. 27, 2006, killing 49 people.

Venezuelan constitutional referendum allows Chavez to run in 2012

Venezuelan constitutional referendum allows Chavez to run in 2012

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez won a constitutional referendum lifting term limits to allow him to run in 2012 presidential election and stay in power as long as he wins elections.

 Tibisay Lucena from the National Electoral Council (CNE) said 54.36 percent of voters approved the constitutional amendment to remove the term limits and 45.63 percent of the voters were against it, according to preliminary results.

    Supporters roamed the streets in vehicles and motorcycles in Caracas after the announcement, waving red flags and honking horns to celebrate the victory. Fireworks were lit across the city.

    Chavez, in his signature red shirt, led the supporters gathering in front of the balcony of his presidential palace singing the national anthem.

    "Today we opened wide the gate to the future," he told the supporters, and "truth and dignity have triumphed" in Venezuela.

 "Unless God disposes otherwise, unless the people dispose otherwise, this soldier is already a candidate," he claimed.

    Chavez has been seeking to stay in power to continue his economic and social development programme which he considered have achieved results but have not been completed.

    A total of 16,767,511 people registered at the CNE cast their votes at the voting centers across the country from 6:00 to 18:00 Sunday local time (1030 to 2230 GMT).

    The voting process went smoothly in all the 23 states, said General Jesus Gonzalez, who leads the security movement known as the "Plan Republica", told a press conference.

    Gonzalez said that several people have been arrested in different states due to felonies against the voting centers.

    Chavez was first elected in 1998 and reelected in 2006. He proposed amendments to the constitution to allow him seeking presidency in 2012.

 Obama's commerce secretary pick withdraws nomination
Judd Gregg, a Republican senator picked by U.S. President Barack Obama as commerce secretary in his cabinet, withdrew nomination on Thursday.

    Gregg made the announcement in a written statement, citing that he and Obama have "different set of views on many critical item

U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday nominated Republican Senator Judd Gregg as commerce secretary in his cabinet. s of policy.

 "I want to thank the President for nominating me to serve in his Cabinet as Secretary of Commerce ... However, it has become apparent during this process that this will not work for me as I have found that on issues such as the stimulus package and the Census there are irresolvable conflicts for me," he said, referring to the stimulus bill being discussed in the Congress.

    Gregg denied any other reason in play for the nomination withdrawal.

    "As a further matter of clarification, nothing about the vetting process played any role in this decision. I will continue to represent the people of New Hampshire in the United States Senate," he said.

    Gregg also noted that there are still opportunities for cooperation ahead.

    "As we move forward, I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the President's proposals. This will certainly be a goal of mine," he said.

    Gregg abstained in the Senate vote on the stimulus bill, but he is apparently under pressure from fellow Republicans.

    He was nominated by Obama as commerce secretary on Feb. 3, after the president's initial pick, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, withdrew nomination amid a grand jury investigation into a state contract awarded to his political donors.

    Gregg, 61, is a former New Hampshire governor who previously served in the House.

    He has been in the Senate since 1993 and currently serves as the top Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, where he is known as a crusader against big spending.

    His departure was seen as a triumph by the Republicans in the heated-up bipartisan fight over the massive economic stimulus bill.

    Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell praised Gregg's decision as "principled," saying that "it's great to have him back."

    But for Obama, the decision is bad-timed and will be a distraction to his efforts to sell the stimulus plan.

    The first consequence, analysts said, is that it creates another loss in his cabinet, which saw health secretary nominee Tom Daschle step aside last week after questions were raised about his failure to pay taxes on a car and driver service.

    Meanwhile, it also risks slowing down the momentum that the Obama administration is building for its economic stimulus plan.

    Furthermore, it also suggested that Obama's efforts to change Washington's old habits of bipartisan fight have fallen short.

Plane crashes in U.S. New York State, 49 reportedly dead

An airliner with 48 people on board crashed into a home in the U.S. State of New York on Thursday evening, with 49 people reported to have been killed.

    The crash occurred at around 10:20 p.m. Thursday in suburban Buffalo in northern New York State, nearly a seven-hour drive from New York City.

    The 50-seat commuter plane, Continental Airlines Flight 3407, was flying from Newark to Buffalo when it crashed into a house in Clarence Center, local officials said at a news briefing on local television.

    The officials said that there were 48 people on board, including 44 passengers and four crew members. The number of people on board was confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

    The Buffalo News reported on its website that 49 people, including all those aboard and a person on the ground, were killed in the crash. It quoted "unconfirmed reports from a source at Buffalo Niagara International Airport."

    The local officials only said that there were "multiple fatalities," including one fatality on the ground.

    TV footage showed that massive fire broke out at the scene of crash, while firemen and police rushed to the scene for rescue.

    The plane was still burning and the firemen refused to say if there were survivors, CNN reported.

    The TV network also reported that two people who were not on the plane were taken to hospital.

    Local officials said at the news briefing that scene was still "very hot" and the firefighters were trying to keep damage to the minimum. So far no firefighter has been reported injured, they noted.

    Twelve nearby homes have been evacuated, they added.

President: Iran ready for fair talks with U.S

President: Iran ready for fair talks with U.S

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that Iran was ready for "fair talks" with the United States.

    Ahmadinejad made the remarks in a rally in Tehran's Azadi (liberty) Squarea to mark the 30th anniversary of the victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution.

    "The Iranian nation is ready to hold talks but talks in a fair atmosphere with mutual respect," Ahmadinejad told the rally.

    "The new U.S. administration has announced that they want to produce changes. Iranian nation welcomes real changes, and it is quite clear that real changes must be fundamental and not tactical," he said.

    Referring to the slogan of "change" by U.S. new President Barack Obama, Ahmadinejad said "the new U.S. administration has said that they want to do changes and to follow the course of dialogue ... but the change must be essential not a tactic."

    "The Iranian nation welcomes true changes and Iran is ready to talk in fair atmosphere with mutual respect," stressed the Iranian president.

    "The United States must give up threats and sanctions," he said, adding Iran has now become "a real and true superpower."

   "Here, I officially announce, Iran today is real and true superpower, but the Iranian nation is fond of justice and the friend of the other nations," and is not the threat for them, he added.

    On Sunday, Iran urged the United States to change the strategy before talks between the two countries are initiated.

    Iran's parliament (Majlis) Speaker Ali Larijani who had participated at the three-day Munich Security Conference, which opened on Friday afternoon, told Iran's IRNA news agency that the U.S. needs a change of strategy to facilitate the direct talks with Iran.

    U.S. President Barack Obama said on Monday that his administration is "looking for openings" to start face-to-face talks with Iran.

    There is a possibility of mutual respect between the United States and Iran, Obama told a press conference, the first of its kind since his inauguration on Jan. 20.

    "My expectation is, in the coming months, we will be looking for openings that can be created where we can start sitting across the table, face-to-face diplomatic overtures, that will allow us to move our policy in a new direction.

    Noting that there's been a lot of mistrust between Washington and Tehran over the decades, Obama said that "there are going to be a set of objectives that we have in these conversations, but I think that there's the possibility at least of a relationship of mutual respect and progress."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivers a speech in a rally to mark the 30th anniversary of the victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution in Tehran, capital of Iran, Feb. 10, 2009. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that Iran was ready for "fair talks" with the United States.

   Washington has been trying to beef up the UN-passed as well as its own sanctions against Tehran for being involved in anti-U.S. coalition forces activities, and for allegedly developing nuclear weapons secretly.

    Iran has denied the charges and insisted that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Beijing Summit adopts declaration, highlighting China-Africa strategic partnership

Beijing Summit adopts declaration, highlighting China-Africa strategic partnership

The Beijing Summit of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Sunday adopted a declaration in the Chinese capital, proclaiming establishment of "a new type of strategic partnership" between China and Africa.

    The partnership features "political equality and mutual trust, economic win-win cooperation and cultural exchanges", said the declaration, which was adopted by leaders of China and 48 African countries at the end of the two-day gathering.

    The declaration was read out by Chinese President Hu Jintao, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and Egyptian President Mohammed Hosni Mubarak, followed by a group photo of the leaders attending the summit.

  "We maintain that in the new era, China and Africa have common development goals and converging interests which offer a broad prospect for cooperation," the declaration said.

    "We hold that the establishment of a new type of strategic partnership is both the shared desire and independent choice of China and Africa, serves our common interests, and will help enhance solidarity, mutual support and assistance and unity of the developing countries and contribute to durable peace and harmonious development in the world," the declaration said.

    To promote the "new type of strategic partnership", the leaders pledged to take a variety of measures, including increasing high-level visits, trade cooperation and cultural exchanges and enhancing coordination in international affairs.

    Trade issues were stressed. The declaration said the leaders agreed to encourage and promote two-way trade and investment and explore new modes of cooperation.

    Priority will be given to cooperation in agriculture, infrastructure, industry, fishing, information technology, public health and personnel training to draw on each other's strengths for the benefit of the two peoples, according to the declaration.

    The leaders also promised to properly handle issues and challenges that may arise in the course of cooperation through friendly consultation in keeping with China-Africa friendship and the long-term interests of the two sides.

    On Saturday, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao proposed that China and Africa should fully tap cooperation potential and strive to bring their trade volume to 100 billion U.S. dollars by 2010.

    The figure will more than double the 2005 level, about 39.7 billion U.S. dollars. In the first nine months, China-Africa trade surged to 40.6 billion U.S. dollars, up 42 percent year-on-year.

    Diplomatic relations between new China and Africa started 50 years ago. So far, 48 out of the 53 countries on the African continent have forged official ties with China.

    At the two-day Summit, the African leaders reiterated their countries' firm commitment to the one-China policy.

    "They (the African countries) reiterated that they adhere to the one-China policy and support China's peaceful reunification," said the declaration.

    China reaffirmed in the declaration that it supports the African countries' efforts to strengthen themselves through unity and independently resolve African problems, supports the African regional and sub-regional organizations in their efforts to promote economic integration, and supports the African countries in implementing the "New Partnership for Africa's Development" programs.

    "The adherence of China, the world's largest developing country, to peaceful development and the commitment of Africa, a continent with the largest number of developing countries, to stability, development and renaissance are in themselves significant contribution to world peace and development," the declaration said.

    Leaders of China and African countries also urged developed countries to increase assistance to Africa.

    "We urge the developed countries to increase official development assistance and honor their commitments to opening market and debt relief," the declaration said.

New York area hotels for New Years?

New York area hotels for New Years?

My boyfriend and I are planning a last minute trip to New York for New Years. In order to save money, we want to stay outside of Manhattan and don't mind driving/taking other transportation, but have no idea where to stay. Anywhere under a $100 a night that won't run the risk of getting robbed/shot and a decent hotel and if you can add easy access to transportation, that would be great!

108 dead as fires continue to ravage Victoria

The death toll from the Victorian bushfires in south Australia has reached 108 by Monday morning and authorities said the number of fire victims was likely to rise even further.

The remains of a properties destroyed by bushfires are seen in the town of Kinglake, 55km (34 miles) northeast of Melbourne Feb. 8, 2009.

 At least 750 homes have been destroyed and more than 330,000 hectare burnt out, while authorities said some fires could take weeks to contain.

    Country Fire Authority (CFA) state duty officer Mark Glover said the toll could still climb further.

    "It's now at 108 and still likely to climb unfortunately," Glover told ABC Television.

    The death toll surpasses that from the 1983 Ash Wednesday bushfires, in which 75 people died in Victoria and South Australia, and the Black Friday bushfires of 1939, which killed 71.

格莱美

 "格莱美"(GRAMMY)是英文Gramophone(留声机)的变异谐音。
I Will Always Love You";要对人生充满希望,如"Evergreen"、"We Are The World";可以怀念所爱的人,如"Tears In Heaven"、"Unforgetable";鼓励人们追求幸福,如"Somewhere Out There";或是扭转劣势的勇气,如"Change The World"等正面意义,以上的主题比较可能得到肯定,这也是为何早期的Rolling Stones与Madonna会被拒之门外的原因。

I have a green card, and I'm a permanent legal resident. What is the procedure to arrange travel to Hawaii or Puerto Rico and back and how long does it take to prepare the paperwork? Or is it like going to another state in the continental US?

Since Hawaii is a state and Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the US, you should be able to travel as you would within the continental US.

i dont think you need Visa for Hawaii if you are a Green card holder same might apply to Puerto Rico

All you need is state issued identification. No need for paperwork.

Are You Aware That The Dems Are Considering Giving Guantanamo Inmates Green Cards And Releasing Them?

Are You Aware That The Dems Are Considering Giving Guantanamo Inmates Green Cards And Releasing Them?

This is no joke. Pelosi, Reid, and Obama are actually considering not only releasing the Guantanamo terrorists, but they might give them green cards and letting them live in the United States. Some of those guys are mass murderers and the Democrats seem to think they deserve to become free Americans. Insanity, don't you think?

It wouldn't surprise me since the prisoners' homelands don't want them, in most cases, and we're forbidden from sending them to countries where they might face real torture and execution.

I only hope that the Democrats in Washington take it one step further and hire each and every one has in-house help. Nothing would please me more than having an Islamofascist as Pelosi's live-in butler.

We need some help with a employment based green card application. What documentation should we submit with it.

We need some help with a employment based green card application. What documentation should we submit with it.

I am assisting a friend get her Green Card. She is employed by a very small and relatively new business that is just getting off the ground.

The application will be for an employment based green card (EB2). Because of the expense, her boss wants to prepare and submit her I-140 and I-485 instead of hiring an immigration attorney. Of course, she will be involved in the process to assist her employer in filling out the forms and gathering necessary documentation. She already has her labor certification and has done her medical.

We are waiting for the October Visa Bulletin to see if visas will be available in October and her employer hopes to submit the forms together.

What information does her employer have to (or should) submit with the green card application, given it is a small, but legitimate, start up business? Any other tips in preparing or submitting the paperwork. Thanks.

Because of the expense, her boss wants to prepare and submit her I-140 and I-485 instead of hiring an immigration attorney.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Her boss is making a HUGE mistake. Heart bypass surgery is expensive too, but I'll be the boss would see a real doctor no matter the expense. It's the same with this matter.
Biden says U.S. willing to talk to Iran conditionally
Biden says U.S. willing to talk to Iran conditionally
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said Saturday that the United States is willing to talk to Iran conditionally, and would try to avoid the last resort to war with the Gulf country.
    "Our government is reviewing our policies to Iran. We will be willing to talk to Iran and offer various choices," but would act to isolate and pressure Iran if it continues its "current course" and does not scrap its nuclear ambitions and support for terrorism, Biden said in a speech at the Munich Security Conference.
U.S. Vice President said here Saturday that Washington would do its utmost to stabilize the financial market, and act aggressively on the issues of climate change and energy security.
 Biden, who is on his first trip abroad since taking office, also promised that Washington would try to "act preventively, and not preemptively" to avoid the choice between the last resort to risks of war and the dangers of inaction.
    In his much anticipated speech, Biden delivered to the world the new U.S. administration's foreign and security policy.
U.S. Vice President Joe Biden said Saturday that the United States is willing to talk to Iran conditionally, and would try to avoid the last resort to war with the Gulf country.
 "We need to set a new tone in relations with countries around the world," said Biden.
    The three-day conference, which opened Friday, focused on major global and regional security issues with participation of a dozen world leaders and officials from over 50 countries.
Obama pushes stimulus package as Republicans skeptical of hard-won deal
Obama pushes stimulus package as Republicans skeptical of hard-won deal
U.S. President Barack Obama Friday named a team of leading economists to help him on the stricken economy as he continued to push the Congress to quickly approve his massive stimulus plan.
U.S. President Barack Obama Saturday stepped up his pressure on Congress to act swiftly as some Republican leaders were skeptical of a hard-won deal of the stimulus bill reached late Friday.
    "In the midst of our greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression, the American people were hoping that Congress would begin to confront the great challenges we face," said Obama in his weekly radio and Internet address.
    "We can't afford to make perfect the enemy of the absolutely necessary. The scale and scope of this plan is right. And the time for action is now," said the president.
    Obama stressed that the bill was necessary to save jobs. "It will save or create more than 3 million jobs over the next two years, all across the country ... and all of them jobs that help us recover today, and prosper tomorrow."
    Obama worked hard on Friday to push Senate Democratic leaders to strike a deal with a handful of Republican moderates on a tentative agreement.
    The 780-billion-U.S.-dollar version was smaller than the original roughly 935-billion-dollar package. Many Republican senators have said they want the total package's cost down to about 800 billion dollars.
    Not counted in that estimate are several popular tax breaks -- including measures to encourage auto and home sales -- that were approved this week on the Senate floor and are expected to be incorporated into the legislation.
    Those could push the final cost of the Senate plan closer to 820 billion dollars and a vote on the deal might come as soon as Monday, according to the U.S. media.
    Among the 110 billion dollars in spending cuts: 40 billion dollars from a 79-billion-dollar fund aimed at helping states preserve school funding as they try to balance their budgets.
    And negotiators cut in half 15 billion dollars in "incentive grants" for states that meet certain goals for their initial education allotment."
    The compromise also would cut 5 billion dollars from a plan to help unemployed workers pay for health-care coverage, reducing the amount the federal government would pay for COBRA premiums to 50 percent from 65 percent.
    And it would cut 2 billion dollars from a plan to help critical-access hospitals computerize medical records.
    The deal followed news earlier Friday that the unemployment rate rose to 7.6 percent in January, the highest level since 1992,as employers slashed 598,000 jobs.
    January's drop, far worse than the 524,000 that economists expected, followed revised declines of 577,000 in December.
    The U.S. economy has lost a staggering 3.6 million jobs since December 2007, when the recession began. And about one-half of this cut occurred in the past three months.
    Obama thus urged the Congress to quickly approve his massive stimulus plan, warning the current crisis could "turn into a catastrophe" if the Congress does not act swiftly.
    "We'll continue to get devastating job reports like today's -- month after month, year after year," he said.
    Democrats, who have 58 of the 100 seats in the Senate, will need at least two Republican votes to avoid procedural roadblocks which could stymie the measure.
    The House passed an 819-billion-dollar version of the stimulus plan last week, but no Republican voted in favor of it.
    However, some Republican leaders were still not satisfied with the compromise, saying many of the provisions won't create jobs.
    "Most of us are deeply skeptical that this will work, and that level of skepticism leads us to believe that this course of action should not be chosen," said Senate Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
    Republican Senator John McCain, who lost to Obama in the 2008 presidential election, also voiced his strong opposition. "If this legislation is passed, it will be a very bad day for America," he warned.
    "We borrowed 800 billion dollars between the Revolutionary War and the presidency of Jimmy Carter and we are going to borrow that amount in one fell swoop," said Republican Senator John Thune.
    But Democratic Senator Kent Conrad said that he expected at least three moderate Republicans will support the economic stimulus package.
do i need a travel insurance to go to the netherlands?
do i need it if im a US citizen and will be staying in the netherlands for 3 months. if i need it, where can i get it from?
It would be recommended if you fall ill or injure yourself then it will cover your medical expenses which can be very costly,also there are other benefits such as loss insurance ETC.
It would be a good idea for anyone to have travel insurance where ever they go, if you choose to have it.
You never know what could happen.
If you there for this long, the odds of having a problem in significantly increased.
Note - Medical insurance is not travel insurance and you need both generally.
Obama names leading economists to advisory panel
Obama names leading economists to advisory panel
U.S. President Barack Obama Friday named a team of leading economists to help him on the stricken economy as he continued to push the Congress to quickly approve his massive stimulus plan.
    The new Economic Recovery Advisory Board, to be headed by Paul Volcker, a former Federal Reserve chairman, will offer independent advice in regular briefings to the president, vice president and their economic team.
  Members will include former Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman William Donaldson, TIAA-CREF President-CEO Roger Ferguson and Harvard University professor Martin Feldstein.
    "I created this board to enlist voices to come from beyond the Washington echo chamber, to ensure that no stone is unturned as we work to put people back to work and get our economy moving," said Obama.
"I'm not interested in groupthink, which is why the Board reflects a broad cross-section of experience, expertise, and ideology," he said. "We've recruited Republican and Democrats; veterans of government and the private sector; advocates for business and labor."
    He also joked that "these days everybody thinks they're an economist."
    "This new institution should send a signal of how seriously I take the responsibility of building an economic recovery that is broad and enduring," said the president, adding that these are "extraordinary times."
 Before Obama signed the executive order officially creating the board, he addressed the jobs numbers and brought home the individual pains behind those almost incomprehensibly large numbers.
    "Somewhere in America, a small business has shut its doors; a family has said goodbye to their home; a young parent has lost their livelihood, and doesn't know what's going to take its place," Obama said.
    The Labor Department reported earlier Friday that the unemployment rate rose to 7.6 percent in January, the highest level since 1992, as employers slashed 598,000 jobs.
    January's drop, far worse than the 524,000 jobs that economists expected, was followed revised declines of 577,000 jobs in December. The U.S. economy has lost a staggering 3.6 million jobs since December 2007, when the recession began. And about one-half of this decline occurred in the past 3 months.
    Obama urged the Congress to quickly approve his massive stimulus plan, saying the current crisis could "turn into a catastrophe" if the Congress does not act swiftly.
    "We'll continue to get devastating job reports like today's — month after month, year after year," he warned.
    "It's very important to understand that, although we had a terrible year with respect to jobs last year, the problem is accelerating, not decelerating. It's getting worse, not getting better," said the president.
Blau Varadero Resort in Cuba?
Blau Varadero Resort in Cuba?
I'm travelling to Cuba for the first time and I just had a few questions in regards to this hotel in particular if anyone could help me.
When tipping the housekeeping staff/maids, what do you leave or how much money? Do you leave them a note? In english or Spanish?
Does anyone know what time the pool is open?
Is it safe to be out on the beach at night?
What kind of activities, shows or day trips are available?
If anyone has any other advice, or if you can answer any of these questions I would really appreciate it! Thank you in advance for you help :) I just wanted to ask one more thing… Does anyone know any good disco's or clubs in Varadero?
Medvedev, Barroso hold talks on energy, Russia-EU ties
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday met with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on energy security, the global financial crisis and Russia-EU ties.
    "The recent gas crisis has shown that things are far from perfect here. The situation is very vulnerable," Medvedev told a meeting with the leadership of the European Commission at the Kremlin.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday met with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on energy security, the global financial crisis and Russia-EU ties.
  "We need to think about creating a full-fledged international legal system to protect against such incidents, because the current system doesn't work," Medvedev said.
    The Russian president urged the European Union to consider "further steps in the area of ensuring security on the European continent," apparently referring to Russia's proposal of a new European security treaty.
    Barroso backed Medvedev's view that European energy security should be ensured
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday met with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on energy security, the global financial crisis and Russia-EU ties.
 "It is very important now to make efforts to prevent such problems in the future. We believe energy security is a very important sphere of interest for Russia and the European Union," Barroso said.
    The European Commission chief also called for "positive interdependence" in relations, saying it is more important now than ever because of the serious global financial crisis.
    The Russia-EU relations deteriorated recently due to the brief war between Russia and Georgia last August and Russia's gas row with Ukraine in January, which left millions of Europeans without heating in the depth of winter for two weeks.
Report: Tentative deal on stimulus package reached
The White House and key senators have reached a tentative agreement on the stimulus package, U.S. media reported on Friday.
    Officials were quoted by major TV networks as saying that the tentative agreement was for a bill with a 780-billion-dollar price tag, lower than the original roughly 935-billion-dollar stimulus plan.
    Many Republican senators have said they want the total package's cost down to about 800 billion dollars.
    Democrats, who have 58 of the 100 seats in the Senate, will need at least two Republican votes to avoid procedural roadblocks which could stymie the measure.
I have both green card and United States passport. May I still use the green card to travel to China?
Hi, I received my US citizen passport WITH my old green card. I was a Chinese citizen. Can I use the green card to go back to China? Thanks.
No, you cannot use your old green card.
The good news is that you can still go back to China to visit; you just have to go through all the hoops of being a non-citizen of China.
Yes, you could but do you feel a proud American or do you still feel you are Chinese and will do anything for China.
If you can have the same fun in the winter time as you would during summer, i don't see why shouldn't you try the winter.
I have an emergency and I need to travel to Mexico by Thursday night. My passport is expired and I'm wondering if there is any way to get around needing it. Someone suggested I go to the Mexican Consulate? Is that a waste of a time or will they be able to offer me some alternatives?
You do not need a passport to go to Mexico. I went there about two weeks ago without a passport. The new passport laws don't go into affect until January 2008.
Obama's health secretary pick withdraws nomination
Obama's health secretary pick withdraws nomination
U.S. President Barack Obama's choice for health secretary in his cabinet, Tom Daschle, withdrew his nomination on Tuesday over tax problems.
    "This morning, Tom Daschle asked me to withdraw his nomination for secretary of health and human services," Obama said in a statement. "I accept his decision with sadness and regret."
Daschle said that he made the decision because he is not a leader who can have the full faith of Congress and will be a distraction to Obama's administration.
    "We need the best care in America to be available to all Americans," Daschle said in the statement issued from the White House. "Lives and livelihoods are at stake."
    Daschle was the second nominee to the Obama administration that withdrew on Tuesday, following the former nominee for White House chief performance officer, Nancy Killefer, who was also plagued by a personal tax issue.
    U.S. media reports said earlier that Daschle, a former Senator from South Dakota, was forced to pay on Jan. 2 more than 120,000 U.S. dollars in back taxes for failing to report using a car and driver service provided by a wealthy friend for over three years.
    Daschle apologized on Monday in a letter to the Senate Finance Committee, which would decide on his confirmation, saying that he was "deeply embarrassed and disappointed" about his failure to pay taxes.
    "I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required me to amend my tax returns," said Daschle. "I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have had to devote time to them."
    Apart from the tax issue, Daschle's nomination was also haunted by his financial disclosure filed about a week ago, showing he made more than 200,000 dollars in the past two years by speaking to the health care industry that he is tasked to reform.
    Nevertheless, Obama voiced his "absolute" support for Daschle on Monday.
    The nation's leading newspaper, the New York Times, called for Daschle's withdrawal in its Tuesday editorial, saying "only after the Obama transition team flagged unrelated tax issues that would require filing amended returns did Mr. Daschle and his accountant address the need to report the personal use value of the car service -- more than 255,000 U.S. dollars over three years -- as income."
    It was considered another embarrassment for the Obama administration, which has witnessed three key designees give up their nomination for scandals related to corruption cases and tax problems.
    Obama's first choice for commerce secretary, Bill Richardson, withdrew his nomination last month due to involvement in a corruption case still under investigation. The president on Tuesday nominated Republican Senator Judd Gregg as a replacement.
    However, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who was also criticized for not paying enough tax but in a smaller scale, survived the Senate confirmation last week.
Does an Alberta GDL drivers license work for United States travel?
Does an Alberta GDL drivers license work for United States travel?
If somebody with an Alberta, Canada GDL drivers license drove into the United States would the GDL license be legal to drive by themselves?
GDL = Graduated Drivers License.
I would say that if the license is valid in your country then it should be valid here for at least 30 days call the DOT at the border where your coming in from Canada to be 100% sure.
Example at Minnesota border call MN DOT
If GDL means General Driver's License, then yes. Canda and the U.S. have full reciprocity regarding licensing. Just be sure to get a card from your insurance agent saying that you are covered in the U.S. I have to get one for Canada. Also, the new I.D. rules for border crossings are in effect, so make sure you have the proper documents when traveling.
